THATS A HAT, is new venture by Philadelphia artist, Lisa Cobb, designer hats are her new exclusive signature. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, Lisa embarked on a passionate pursuit into millinery and the adventure is delightful. I caught her designs at Haddonfield Fine Art and Craft Show last summer and was so turned on by my purchase I have since had two custom hats made. Lisa Cobb is ‘one of a kind’ and her designer hats are pure artistry, she models mediums and textiles into fabulous creations.

Having a large head was always a problem for me in the past for original hats, but it’s Lisa Cobb’s specialty, she states “if a creation doesn’t sell I can wear it myself for I have a big noggin” and she wars them beautifully.

I ventured into Lisa Cobb’s unique hat boutique, proceeded to try on at least 20 designer hats and I was in heaven. I was born in the wrong decade, it should have been the 20’s or 30’s when millinery was high fashion and it was unheard of to go out of the house without the full ensemble topped off with the ultimate hat. I am so tired of abusive casual wear, wearing shorts to a fine restaurant or sneakers to a Saturday night show. I am Lucy Ricardo, when it comes to not being able to resist ‘that cutest number’.

The hat is the ultimate statement of elegance and individuality and Lisa Cobb delivers absolutely wonderful creations. Times have truly changed; I grew up in the early seventies as a young girl through times of women’s lib in which you opened your own door…..oh how the times are a changing. Lisa Cobb is a fresh and new artist of designer hats. After graduating Rhode Island School of Design with an Industrial Design BA, she embarked on her unusual designer hats with vigor and flare. With a desire of the outrageous and an intense drive that burns within, her designer hats are a wonderful statement to the millinery fashion. Lisa Cobb brings new twists and curves to her sculptures for the head. Her craft is fueled by her intense use of color, vintage trims, and unusual textiles, Lisa’s designer hats are superbly thought out and crafted.

Lisa begins her process one designer hat at a time, with sketching, then draping fabric, straw or felt on molds to get the truest base. “I believe that hats are the ultimate cosmetics, the right designer hats can instantaneously transform the shape of one’s face and I create them accordingly to flatter and enhance.” Lisa goes on to say “they on sculptures contoured just enough to create a sensual effect as an asymmetrical brim emphasizes cheekbones or the large picture hat places a mysterious shadow over the eye.”

Designer hats were a deep calling to Lisa Cobb. It started when she was young and fashion reflected her true gypsy spirit. Her first couture ensemble was a Barbie draped in painted tissues and fabric remnants and the final finest trim topped off the bouffant.

Lisa laughs, “we didn’t have the money to buy outfits, I’m truly thankful for that because I learned how to think outside the box.” In high school, Lisa was always on the search for vintage garb to redo and create a whole new look. “Back then it was so much cheaper to go to Goodwill and find fabric and ornaments.” These bohemian influences are apparent in Lisa’s use of vibrant prints and lush trims that are juxtaposed with delicate fabrics, bringing flirty silhouettes to designer hats.

Encouraged by a “fabulously styled mother and a father that loved to build” Lisa pursued her 3-Dimensional abilities in clay sculpture, costume design, 3-D interiors and graphics that led to the path to designer hats. “After getting my degree in design from RISD it just all came together, my passionate transgression into the world of millinery and designer hats.”
